With a web of winding streets, each distinct shopping area has its own speciality.

The Shambles is one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. Its worth it just for the photo opportunity. Look out for the wooden shelves on the outside of the buildings, from when goods were served from the open windows. The Shambles Market is a historic and vibrant market and a one-stop shop for all your shopping needs including gifts, fresh flowers, vintage clothing and much more.

Parliament and Coney Street are home to the high street favourites. While Coppergate, where archaeologists unearthed remains from the Viking city of Jorvik, is where you’ll also find the latest trends. Its home to both the famous department store Fenwick’s and to Primark, where you can grab a bargain or two.

The stores hidden amongst the medieval and Georgian architecture of Stonegate and Swinegate are well worth exploring. Fossgate – home of the fish market in medieval times – retains a certain bohemian charm.
