What’s on in York in September 2021
Alongside the many regular attractions, York has a constantly changing programme of events to suit every taste. From groups and parties to families with children, there’s something for everyone. Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years
A major new exhibition featuring the earliest works and “lost pots” of one of Britain’s most well known artists. The touring exhibition, developed by the Holburne Museum in Bath, is the first to celebrate Grayson Perry’s earliest forays into the art world and will re-introduce the explosive and creative works he made between 1982 and 1994. The remarkable 70 works included in the exhibition have been crowd-sourced following a national public appeal. These ‘lost’ pots will be on display together for the first time since they were made. Tribute Ink
York Army Museum
An inspiring exhibition revealing powerful stories of Remembrance living in the tattoos of our Armed Forces. Tattoos play a key role within our Armed Forces communities. Inked onto the skin of servicemen and women, they are a personal act of Remembrance, a statement of belonging or a record of significant events, acting as a permanent reminder of the wearer’s experiences, triumphs and losses. The Royal British Legion, together with the National Memorial Arboretum and photographer Charlie Clift, has worked with the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force to uncover how tattooing remains an emotional and meaningful act in our Armed Forces today.
Lifting Lockdown with the Georgians
Fairfax House
Welcome to the good times again! This brand-new exhibition, installed throughout Fairfax House’s stunning historic rooms, celebrates the end of lockdown Georgian style. Each room in the house explores a different longed for post-lockdown activity, whether that is being reunited with friends and family, having the opportunity to travel, to rekindle a romance placed on pause, to celebrate and dance, or simply to ditch the pyjamas and get all dressed up. Told from the perspective of the eighteenth century, the exhibition draws on the house’s rich and varied history, as well as utilising its magnificent collections. Pictures of the Floating World: Japanese Ukiyo-e Prints
York Art Gallery
‘Pictures of the Floating World: Japanese Ukiyo-e Prints’ will feature prints by prominent Ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige, along with works by those influenced by Japanese art, such as public favourites Albert Moore and Walter Greaves. This unique display will highlight the significant impact of Japanese art on the western world and the consequential rise of artistic movements such as Aestheticism and Art Nouveau. “Ukiyo-e” translates as “pictures of the floating world”, referring to the transitory nature of life.
Light, Glass & Stone: Conserving the St Cuthbert Window

Explore the medieval St Cuthbert Window through a new exhibition which tells the story of the life and miracles of one of Northern England’s most significant saints. Learn about the cathedral’s project starting in 2021 to conserve the 600-year-old window, which is one of the largest surviving narrative windows in Europe and among the finest remaining examples of the art and techniques of medieval glaziers and stonemasons. Take the rare opportunity to see at close range original stained glass panels removed from the window as part of the conservation and restoration project.
The York National Book Fair 2021
The largest, and many say, friendliest, rare and antiquarian and out-of-print book fair in the UK, the York National Book Fair, is back! Taking place over two days this September 2021, around 170 of the country’s leading booksellers will be offering up for sale a breathtaking selection of books, maps, prints and ephemera, ranging in price from just a few pounds up to tens of thousands of pounds. Covering all subject matters and offering something for every age, this brilliant annual event is excited to be throwing its doors open in York once more. Richard III: Coming Home
Yorkshire Museum & Gardens, Museum Gardens
The world-famous late 16th century portrait of Richard III will go on display at the Yorkshire Museum as part of a new display. The loan to the Yorkshire Museum is part of the National Portrait Gallery’s nation-wide COMING HOME project, which sees the Gallery sending portraits of iconic individuals to places they are closely associated with. The painting, which has become synonymous with the depiction of Richard III, will form the centrepiece of the new display, which includes the Yorkshire Museum’s outstanding collections associated with the King. Objects such as the magnificent Middleham Jewel, The Ryther Hoard and the Stillingfleet Boar Badge worn by one of his supporters, will be on display.
